More funk/dance orientated than normal, Queer is a fun, creative slice of pop which adopts some of the styles of whatever passed for pop in 1991 and actually uses them in a listenable way, although it’s a couple of slower songs which are among the best, like the sunny “Flower Girl” and “Flesh And Blood”. But the likes of “Groove On” and “Shake It Down” are two other highlights, and there’s a sense of playfulness about the whole thing which has probably not been found since Quick Step and Side Kick.
With Queer, the Thompson Twins began incorporating current dance trends, particularly the dense, psychedelic Manchester sound of the Happy Mondays. It is an ambitious effort, but it isn’t entirely successful – the group doesn’t work the groove as effectively as the Madchester groups, nor do they come up with a catchy dance-pop tune. Instead, you can hear the group work to re-establish themselves as artists. Queer is an an admirable attempt, but that doesn’t make it a good listen.
